Lost and Found in Bangladesh: A Journey of Mistakes, Discoveries, and Hidden Gems

Writer's picture: Budget NomadBudget Nomad

Hello, fellow adventurers! Welcome back to another blog post, and let me tell you, this journey has been anything but ordinary. As any seasoned traveler will tell you, not every trip goes as planned—but that’s what makes the experience even more memorable! I’ve encountered a few bumps along the way, but that only adds to the adventure. So, let me take you through the highs and lows of my recent travels in Bangladesh, filled with unexpected twists and cultural encounters.

The Bus Mix-Up: A Traveler's Dilemma

I began my journey in M Missing, with the intention of heading to Bogra. It seemed like a simple enough trip—until I ended up on the wrong bus. After several interactions with people along the way, I learned that I had been put on a bus to Daer instead. As the bus sped off, it wasn’t until halfway through the journey that I realized my mistake. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much I could do to change course at that point, and I was stuck on the wrong route for hours.

Sometimes, this happens when you're traveling, and there’s no point in stressing about it. You just have to embrace it and enjoy the ride—literally! In the end, I reached my destination the next day. The following bus ride to Bogra was much more comfortable, despite its humble appearance. From the outside, the bus looked like a rundown shed, but inside, it was air-conditioned with leather seats—surprisingly cozy!

A Quick Pit Stop at the Services: Comfort on the Road

During the bus ride, we stopped at a service area, and it turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise. The restaurant was air-conditioned, offering fresh fruits, drinks, and a variety of food. When you’re traveling long distances, these service stops make a huge difference. It’s a relief to find a clean and comfortable spot to relax and recharge before continuing the journey. I always look out for these gems—they make the whole travel experience more enjoyable.

Wise Bank: The Perfect Travel Companion (ADVERT)

Speaking of money, I always make sure to have access to funds no matter where I am. If you're traveling for an extended period, or just prefer a hassle-free way to manage your finances abroad, I highly recommend using Wise Bank (formerly TransferWise). Their multi-currency accounts allow you to hold and exchange money at the real exchange rate, without the expensive fees that most banks charge. It’s a great way to manage your funds while traveling—whether you're in Bangladesh or anywhere else.

Discovering Ancient History: Bogra’s Rich Past

Once I finally made it to Bogra, I couldn’t wait to dive into the city’s rich history. Bogra is home to one of the oldest cities in Bangladesh, dating back to the 3rd century. While much of the original city has been lost to time, there are still significant archaeological sites that showcase the area’s importance. The outer wall of the ancient city is still standing, and visitors can walk along it and take in the surrounding rural landscape.

What’s fascinating about this site is that it was once a cultural melting pot—inhabited by Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists. Today, the area feels calm and peaceful, with farmlands stretching as far as the eye can see, offering a glimpse of the past that still influences the local culture today.

Lover’s Corner: A Park for Young Love

After touring the archaeological sites, I stumbled upon a park that seemed to be a popular hangout for young lovers. As I walked along the pathways, I noticed several couples sitting on benches, holding hands, and enjoying each other’s company. It’s always interesting to see how different cultures express affection in public spaces.

I couldn’t help but smile, knowing that I was probably the only one in the park with a camera in hand, making everyone around me a little curious. But hey, that’s what makes traveling so fun—the chance to experience new places and new people.

The Ticket Trouble: A Little Rip-Off

One aspect of traveling that can sometimes be frustrating is the difference in pricing for locals and tourists. At one of the historical sites, I walked up to the ticket counter and was told that the entry fee was 200 Taka. It wasn’t until later that I realized locals were paying only 20 Taka for the same site. I felt a bit ripped off, but at least I got to enjoy the view. This kind of pricing disparity is common in many touristy areas, but it's all part of the experience.

Citadel Museum and Gardens: A Peaceful Escape

Next, I headed to the Citadel Museum, hoping to learn more about the history of the area. Unfortunately, my timing was a bit off, and the museum was closed when I arrived. But it wasn’t a total loss because the museum grounds are surrounded by beautiful gardens, which seemed to be a popular spot for locals to relax and unwind. The lush greenery and peaceful atmosphere made for a lovely escape.

I spent a few hours strolling through the gardens, taking in the natural beauty, and even doing a quick 360-degree video to capture the peaceful surroundings. Sometimes, the best parts of a trip are the unexpected moments—like this relaxing time in the gardens.

Becoming Famous for Selfies: The Perks of Being a Tourist

One thing you’ll notice when traveling in Bangladesh (and many other countries) is that you’re bound to become a local celebrity, especially if you’re a foreigner. I’ve lost count of how many selfies I’ve taken with locals. It’s a funny and humbling experience. The people here are so friendly, and they often want to take pictures with you to commemorate the moment. Honestly, I’m starting to think I should start charging for these photos—100 Taka per selfie, anyone?

Getting Around: Navigating Local Transportation

When it comes to getting around Bangladesh, CNG drivers (auto-rickshaws) are everywhere. While they’re a convenient and affordable way to get around, I quickly learned that they tend to overcharge tourists. In this case, I decided to pay the full fare but also offered free rides to some local people I met along the way. The driver wasn’t too pleased with this, but that’s just how things go when you’re trying to make your way around an unfamiliar place.

Safety Tip: Always Keep Your Essentials Secure

As with any trip, it’s important to keep your belongings safe, especially in crowded areas. While Bangladesh is generally safe, it’s always wise to keep your valuables secure. Use a money belt or a neck pouch for important documents and money, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. When traveling by bus or in busy markets, stay vigilant and keep an eye on your bags at all times.
