Hidden Paradise: Discovering Mongla and the Sundarbans on a Budget

Writer's picture: Budget NomadBudget Nomad

I recently had an unforgettable experience in Mongla, a small town in Bangladesh located at the edge of the world’s largest mangrove forest. Despite a challenging journey, including a rough train ride and battling some illness, I eventually made it to this peaceful spot, and it didn’t disappoint.

The Journey to Mongla

The trip to Mongla wasn’t easy. My journey started with a freezing train ride—think refrigeration-level cold—lasting seven hours. Around the four-hour mark, I started feeling unwell, but I powered through. Finally, after checking into a charming hotel in Mongla, I felt better and was ready to explore this serene place.

The Charm of Mongla

Mongla is located right by a river, offering a peaceful setting for visitors. The town itself is a quaint haven, but it’s the proximity to the Sundarbans—a massive mangrove forest and UNESCO World Heritage site—that draws nature lovers and adventurers. The Sundarbans are known for being home to the elusive Bengal tiger, although seeing one is a rare treat.

Although I didn’t spot a tiger, the beauty of the mangrove forest and the surrounding landscapes left a lasting impression. The hotel I stayed at was a lovely surprise, offering a view of lush gardens right outside my window. It was simple but perfect for what I needed: rest and a bit of luxury in the middle of nature.

Wise Bank: When booking accommodations or tours, always check trusted platforms to ensure you’re not overpaying or getting scammed. Wise Bank allows you to send and receive money globally with low fees, particularly handy if you’re dealing with local currencies that might have high exchange rates.

Boating to Kuakata and Exploring Mongla

During my stay, I was fortunate enough to take a boat ride, a popular mode of transport in this area. The trip across the river to Kuakata, a beach town nearby, offered stunning views. However, I had a bit of a surprise when I was quoted 50,000 taka (around 500 pounds) for the trip! Fortunately, I found a more affordable option with a local boatman who offered a much better rate.

While I didn’t venture far into the Sundarbans, I did visit a part of the Sundarbans National Park during a half-day tour. The trip included a boat ride, where I could admire the lush greenery and wildlife. Although I didn’t see any tigers, I did spot some deer, and the natural surroundings made the trip worth it.

Highlights of the Trip:

  • Mongla’s Tranquil Beauty: The town is charming, with beautiful gardens, the river, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it the perfect base for exploring the Sundarbans.

  • The Sundarbans: As the largest mangrove forest in the world, it offers a serene and mysterious vibe, with the chance to spot wildlife like deer and rare birds. Though I didn’t see a tiger, I still enjoyed the experience.

  • Affordable Boat Tours: I highly recommend booking boat trips directly with local boatmen. The rates are much more reasonable than booking through hotels.

Final Thoughts:

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Bangladesh, Mongla and the Sundarbans are must-see destinations. While tiger sightings are rare, the peaceful boat rides, beautiful landscapes, and friendly locals make it an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re looking to relax or explore, this area offers the perfect mix of both. I highly recommend staying for a few days to really soak in the beauty of this unique part of the world.

Stay Safe and Travel Smart:

As you plan your trip to Mongla and the Sundarbans, it’s essential to stay safe and be prepared. Traveling to less-developed areas can be exciting, but it also requires a bit more caution.

  • SafetyWing Insurance: Consider SafetyWing insurance for peace of mind during your travels. SafetyWing offers affordable travel health insurance that covers a wide range of medical emergencies, including unexpected illnesses (like the one I encountered).

If you’re planning a trip soon, don’t forget to book your accommodations and tours carefully, stay safe, and make the most of your time exploring this beautiful part of the world.

Safe travels, and I hope you get the chance to experience Mongla’s unique charm soon!
