These are horrific times with refugees are trying to escape their motherland for fear of losing their lives. They have to leave behind all of their worldly possessions in hopes of creating a productive life in a new country.
When one considers the adage “Motherland” or “Fatherland”, the images that should be conjured are those of protection, security, acceptance; those are the qualities generally associated with mother or father. For hundreds of thousands, this is not the case at all.

We tend to forget our ancestors, unless we are 100% Native to our country (United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and others); we come from “the other”. Our ancestors were once “those people”. Those people who arrived in a new land, were those seen as the people who were going to threaten the status quo.
