Last night I received this notice. Can you imagine if you were planning on flying somewhere in the morning. What a panic! This was unclassified, so I have no problem with sharing it.

Budapest Airport Closure
December 7, 2012

The Budapest Airport was forced to close at 11:50 a.m. local time because of a ground equipment failure.  Inbound flights are being directed to airports in the region, including Vienna and Bratislava.  The airport will remain closed to inbound and outgoing flights.  The Airport Authorities anticipate the opening at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8.  However, please contact your airline before heading to the airport as airport closures are subject to change.  For additional information, please refer to the Budapest Airport website: http://www.bud.hu/english

Current information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States or a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444 for callers from other countries.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).  You can also stay up to date by bookmarking our Bureau of Consular Affairs website, which contains the current Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts as well as the Worldwide Caution.  Follow the Bureau of Consular Affairs on Facebook as well.

We strongly encourage U.S. citizens living or traveling in Hungary to register with the U.S. Embassy in Budapest through the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to obtain updated information on travel and security within Hungary.  By registering, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.  U.S. citizens without Internet access may register directly at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest.
